Well, I just read the above mentioned thread. I seems to me that only one or two posters on that thread had their mind made up on the issue and were quite vocal about it. I wouldn't get my nickers in a bunch over it, if I were you, Tim. There are plenty of areas in lutherie that some builders swear by that I think are nonsense. If I feel compelled to point it out in a post, I brace myself for disagreement. If that disagreement is limited to the topic at hand and does not become personal, I'll argue the point until we either agree to disagree or prehaps we refine our arguments and come to an understanding. If an argument becomes personal, I just stop posting.

If someone calls my ideas "crap" and trys to say why, I try to keep an open mind. If someone calls me an idiot, I figure that the argument has gone personal and that the other guy has no other logical points to make and the I've "won" the argument.

Ok time to throw in my $.02

Tim,

I love ya pal but why even post there?? Mario's right that it's the church of Martin and your not even an alter boy there, I think they were a bit classless in their response (I only got the see the first page), but the world is full of people like that. Just ignore them and move on, you have more important things you can be doing

As for tuning the back...

*I* (note this is MY belief) think that the guitar is a sum of ALL it's parts, but that the top and the back both contribute to the overall sound of the guitar more than anything else (I know duh!!), the body of a guitar is like a tuned speaker box. I tune my backs to have a nice ringing tone, couldn't tell you what note it is, but I know it when I hear it.

When I finally get the top and back glued on I spend a day carefully sanding down the edges of the top and back to free them up until an open tap on the top and back give a nice solid tone (or bonk if you will). I also use thin/high braces in the back as opposed to the standard martin squat ones.

Cheers

I sure don't know much about tuning backs and my humble experience in guitar forum discussions has just begun. When expressing my first opinion on the subject, it was more of a wish that the guys over there could have shown more respect but who am i to judge on others sensitivity? The notion of church-forum is new to me but when put in perspective, when your a strong believer and church goer, you're probably want to defend your parish ferociously, which i would probably do if any outsider came here and tried to defy any of the veterans here.

Even as a rookie, since everyone has been nice to me so far, i feel that i belong here and not there. My niche is here and hope you guys can put up with some of my bizarre questions from time to time. I sure will listen to all the wisdom comin' out of the more experienced and in return, i sure will try to bring positiveness and kindness to all here!

Regards Serge

Tim- as a member of both forums I have to agree that you got pretty shabby treatment there. But remember- like most forums, the folks at the UMGF are 99.9% cool. You just ran afoul of one of the opinionated old farts. Hopefully Bryan Kimsey will see the light and join us over here.

I post there to talk about how great my Martins are. I post here to learn how to build better guitars. Let 'em have their world; it's their loss if they don't listen. But the smart ones will....

O.k. so by pure definition...it's a church( not one in the way I think of, but by definition perhaps you can call it that). I think being rude for rude's sake is wrong...Please excuse me, I sometimes forget that the world we live in is this way. So Tim got what he deserved for visiting a site of Martin worshipers. Tim you bad boy...don't you ever do that again...if you ever go back just lay low and keep your mouth shut. Next time you have a question ask some people who don't mind you asking...I think it's sad.

Dave, i don't think that Tim got what he deserved, he just happened to be exchangin' opinions with someone lacking manners and that can happen even here, we're all humans and all have our days. I'm pretty sure the other guy felt bad inside after the events and that both of them learned something out of it.
